All of Iowa, Flooding, Severe Weather

Possible Active Day for First Full Day of Fall

It could be an active day across the state this afternoon to bring in the season of fall. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for nearly the entire state of Iowa for the rest of the afternoon into tonight. The main threats will be from large hail and damaging straightline winds. A tornado or two is also possible as well. Heavy rain will be possible as well with some of the thunderstorms, flash flooding is possible as well, along with the threat of river flooding. Many rivers in the northwestern part of the state are under river flood warnings at this time due to the amount of rain that has fallen in those areas over the last 24 hours. A post on the latest river flood warnings will be forthcoming later today or tonight once the severe weather threat begins to wane.

Temperatures today will not be fall like at all. Outside of the rain that is falling in northwest Iowa late this morning and early afternoon, temperatures will climb into the 80s once more. Along with the high humidity, it will be feel more like July or August rather than the end of September. A cold front will move across the state later tonight, sparking the chances for showers and thunderstorms to develop. This will also bring cooler conditions to the state for the upcoming weekend. Highs this weekend will be around 10-15° cooler than today.
