A Flash flood Watch will go into effect later this morning (10am) and will be in effect until 7pm Monday evening for the following counties, Adair, Adams, Appanoose, Audubon, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Butler, Cass, Clarke, Dallas, Davis, Decatur, Franklin, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Monroe, Polk, Poweshiek, Ringgold, Story, Tama, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren and Wayne. At 1pm this afternoon the following counties are then added to the Flash Flood Watch that will expire at 7pm, Benton, Buchanan, Cedar, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Henry, Iowa, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Muscatine, Van Buren, Washington, Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Floyd, Howard, Mitchell and Winneshiek.
This evening’s QPF chart says it all, given the fact that this is only one model run out of several. This one shows a large swath across the eastern and southeastern counties of over 6+ inches of rain over the next 5 days. Whereas I don’t think the state is going to get “THAT” much, a general 2-4 inches is likely across the state. Given the fact that the soil (even though it has dried out somewhat) isn’t as wet as it was last week, heavy rain will likely cause rivers, creeks and streams to quickly rise and go over their banks, possibly leading to Flash Flooding.
