All of Iowa, Severe Weather

Slight Risk in NW Iowa later today, SE Half Friday

The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a slight risk of severe weather for the NW part of the state for mainly late this afternoon and this evening into the overnight. This is mainly west of a line from Spirit Lake to Storm Lake to Onawa. An MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) will likely form in northern Nebraska or southern South Dakota and move E/ESE into Iowa late in the afternoon or evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main threats with the activity. The storms should weaken to below severe weather limits as they continue eastward into the state during the early morning hours of Friday.

Friday, there is a slight risk of severe weather over the southeastern half of the state. This is mainly southeast of a line from Dubuque to Mount Ayr. Large hail and damaging winds will again be the main threats with any activity that develops Friday afternoon. Friday’s setup will be similiar in scope to today, with another MCS likely forming on a outflow boundary leftover from any storms that form later today. Where that boundary sets up or how much cloudiness remains from the storms that occur later tonight into Friday morning will also effect where or if any storms will be severe or if they even form at all. More on these events will be posted later today.
