Some Severe Storms Possible Today

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for the rest of the afternoon into the evening hours for the northern parts of the state, mainly north of US Hwy 20.

Given that dewpoints are rather low (40s and 50s), large hail and damaging winds will be the main threats with any storms that fire this afternoon. Already there are strong wind gusts occurring this afternoon without the need of a thunderstorm. Sustained winds gusts occasionally over 40 have been recorded all morning into the early afternoon hours. A Wind Advisory is in effect for Adair, Audubon, Boone, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cerro Gordo, Crawford, Dallas, Emmet, Franklin, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Humboldt, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Sac, Webster, Winnebago, Worth and Wright counties until 4pm and for Dickinson, Lyon and Osceola counties until 7pm.

The thunderstorms will begin to dissipate at sunset and severe weather will not be expected after Midnight tonight.
