Winter Storm Warning for Nearly Entire State

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for nearly the entire state (the only exceptions being Allamakee and Winneshiek counties in NE Iowa which are under Winter Weather Advisories). The Warning goes into effect this morning in the western part of the state and this afternoon over the east. It is in effect through Thursday afternoon or evening (from west to east). A Blizzard watch is still in effect in NW Iowa Thursday evening. Widespread snow amounts of 3 to as much as 9 inches of snow are possible with this storm. The snow will be very powdery and will easily blow around in the strong winds that will follow the precipitation. Near Blizzard conditions will be possible statewide by late on Thursday into the early morning hours of Friday. Travel may become hazardous, especially on rural roads, with the blowing and drifting of the snow. Wind Chills will become a factor on Thursday, with actual air temperatures dropping back below zero once more, and with strong winds out of the NW, readings will likely drop into the -20s and -30s by Thursday night. A Wind Chill Advisory or Warning will likely be issued sometime on Thursday.
