Christmas Week Storm 2009: Looking Ahead

Not much has changed with the 0z GFS model run. Freezing Drizzle currently scattered across the state will continue through the morning hours. Some light snow will start falling across NW Iowa. Warmer air will move in from the south changing the precipitation to all rain mainly south of US Hwy 30 and east of I-35 by late afternoon, with a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow to the north and west.

Christmas Eve morning, precipitation will be in the form of rain in EC, SC and SE Iowa, with a mix in NE, C and SW Iowa, and snow elsewhere. By afternoon, colder air will move southeastward across the state changing the precipitation to a mix of snow and sleet with some freezing rain in the southeastern half of the state, with snow in the NW. Friday morning the precipitation may start out briefly as a mix in eastern Iowa before changing to all snow my mid to late morning. Winds will be rather variable with the low pressure over the state. The heaviest snow looks to be setting up in northwest Iowa, with lighter snows to the southeast.

By Christmas Night, the snow will be light to moderate across the state. Strong northerly winds over NW Iowa will likely create near blizzard conditions over that area, with lighter winds elsewhere. Snow will taper off to flurries and/or snow showers on Saturday, with the storm moving out late on Saturday.

A lot of moisture will fall from this storm system, which may create many problems in different parts of the state. From possible flooding in SE Iowa, to blizzard conditions in NW Iowa, to the possibility of an ice storm in other locations. This is a very complicated storm system, where the slightest temperature difference could mean a lot.
