More Analysis on Christmas Week Storm

Christmas Eve at Noon

Here is the 0z GFS model at Noon on Christmas Eve. The 500mb chart and the 850mb Temperature chart have been superimposed and I have color coded the snow and mixed precipitation.
It’s beginning to look like the storm will start out late Wednesday night as a mix of sleet, possible freezing rain and snow. Warmer air will move into the eastern and southeastern parts of the state changing most of the precipitation there to all rain or a mix of rain and sleet. The central parts of the state will likely stay with a mix of freezing rain, ice pellets, sleet and snow, with the northwestern parts of the state staying as all snow.
It’s all about what the surface temperatures are going to be when this storm gets here. The 500mb chart shows most of the state will be at or above freezing at Noon on Thursday (the 540 line), but the 850mb chart shows only the extreme southeastern parts of the state will be at or above freezing. Add on to the fact that the latest QPF chart at 0z shows that anywhere between 1-2 inches of liquid precipitation is expected to fall between Wednesday night and Friday night. If it were to fall mostly as snow, we’d be talking about heavy WET snow of more than 6 inches, maybe close to a foot, or a major ice storm that could create numerous long lasting power outages, or we could be talking about a possible flooding situation, especially with many of the rivers having become iced up from recent cold snaps over the last few weeks.

In any case, this storm is going to have a lot of moisture with it, and it could be rain, sleet, snow, freezing rain. The question is, when is it going to fall as what type of precip and what will the temperature be at that particular time. This is a storm that would need to be watched, especially for anyone that will be travelling in the state, or in the midwest for the holiday.
