Christmas Week Storm 2009: Monday Night Analysis

Christmas Eve at Noon

The latest model run (18z GFS) shows the center of the storm between Joplin and Kansas City. Warm air will be pumped into the storm from the south, which could make the situation rather troublesome. Temperatures in the state Thursday will likely be within a few degrees either side of the freezing point. This will give a good indication of what type of precipitation is going to fall. The chart above (500mb and 850mb Temp), shows that the precipitation over the state at mid-day Thursday will likely be a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain. The northwestern quarter of the state may stay as all snow or briefly mix with some sleet. Some areas Wednesday and even Thursday may see all rain for a time. Depending on how much rain falls could lead to the possibility of some flooding occurring due to frozen ground.

In any case, the storm will begin effecting the state late on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and may last through the holiday and into the early part of the weekend before finally moving out. If you have to travel for the holiday, be aware of the travel conditions as you make you way to your destination. More questions will likely be answered later tonight or tomorrow morning with more models being run.
