6 Days in SOCAL: Catalina Cruising

Early in the morning, we set off for Avalon on the island of Catalina, or Santa Catalina as it is known. Under the marine layer that was blowing on shore from the Pacific Ocean, we set out at 8:30am out of the landing, in downtown Long Beach, sailing past the Queen Mary and a Carnival Cruise Ship that was docked next to it. In an hours time, we arrived at the harbor of Avalon, population just over three-thousand. On this day, though there must have been over ten thousand people or more roaming through the streets. When we mean “roaming through the streets”, we actually mean it. Automobile use on Catalina is restricted, golf carts are the main form of transportation around Avalon. Sunshine soon warmed the temperature into the mid-upper 70s, with a wind coming off the ocean. The marine layer disappeared, with only a few puffy clouds in between Catalina and the mainland. Off in the distance you could see the smoke from the Station Fire, that is over 50% contained as of early this afternoon, but it was very far from Avalon (over 60 miles). At mid-afternoon we headed back onto the boat for the hour trip back to Long Beach. Pictures will be posted shortly (the internet at the hotel is very shotty)
