The Risks Today

The Storm Prediction Center still has a slight risk of severe weather for later today (Friday) across the entire state (except extreme SW Iowa). The main threats will likely be damaging winds and large hail, with an isolated tornado possible especially along the advancing warm front. The main time-frame for the severe weather will be in the late afternoon into the early evening. After that time, the main threats will likely be damaging wind and large hail, with wind becoming the main severe weather threat after midnight as an MCS moves through. Saturday still has a slight risk of severe weather for areas roughly north of US Hwy 30. The severe weather threats on Saturday will likely be large hail and damaging winds, but it depends on what happens on today with outflow boundaries, rain-cooled air and stable atmospheric conditions. It will also be very hot Saturday with highs generally in the 90s with heat indices near or topping 100.
