Heat Burst This Morning

As the thunderstorms that had been severe in the overnight hours began to collapse, very strong winds were felt across the eastern part of the state. Winds gusted to near 70mph at Cedar Rapids and the temperature rose 10-15 degrees in less than 30 minutes. This is known as a heat burst, when very strong winds from collapsing thunderstorms bring warm air down to the surface and causes the temperatures to rise and the dewpoints to drop. They usually do not last very long. This one lasted about 30 minutes before temperatures began to cool back down and the dewpoints began to rise once more.
