The first heat wave of the year is beginning across the state. A heat advisory is in effect for areas along and south of Interstate 80. Currently at early afternoon, temperatures have already eclipsed the 90 degree mark across most of the state. With dewpoints in the 70s to around 80, this is leading to some very dangerous heat index levels. Shenandoah in southwest Iowa has a heat index at 2pm of 114°, Mount Pleasant and Keokuk in southeast Iowa each have a heat index of 110°, Newton (home of the Iowa Speedway) has a heat index of 108°. This will continue through mid-week when a cold front will move into the state, bringing drier air to the state and dropping temperatures back into the 80s.
