* URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR MINOR FLOODING OF POOR DRAINAGE AREAS IN…
WESTERN STORY COUNTY IN CENTRAL IOWA

* UNTIL 1130 PM CDT

* AT 517 PM CDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED AN AREA OF HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. DOPPLER RADAR ESTIMATED THAT OVER 2 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN IN THE AMES AREA THROUGHOUT THE PAST HOUR AND A HALF.

* RUNOFF FROM THIS RAINFALL WILL CAUSE MINOR FLOODING TO OCCUR…ESPECIALLY ALONG SMALL STREAMS AND NEAR LOW WATER CROSSINGS. SOME LOCATIONS THAT WILL EXPERIENCE FLOODING INCLUDE…AMES…HUXLEY…NEVADA…AMES AIRPORT…CAMBRIDGE…GILBERT…KELLEY…SHELDAHL AND
SLATER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

AN ADDITIONAL INCH TO INCH AND A HALF OF RAINFALL IS POSSIBLE
THROUGH 7 PM IN THE ADVISORY AREA.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAINFALL WILL CAUSE MINOR FLOODING OF SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS…AND PONDING OF WATER IN URBAN AREAS…AND ON HIGHWAYS…STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS. DO NOT DRIVE AROUND BARRICADES SET UP TO BLOCK WATER COVERED ROADWAYS. THE BARRICADES ARE SET UP FOR YOUR PROTECTION.

MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY.
