The National Weather Service has changed the advisories and watches and warnings. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect in NE Iowa, (This will likely change in an hour or so, when the morning discussion is issued by the National Weather Service in LaCrosse. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued that will go into effect at 6am this morning and be in effect until 6pm this evening for Cerro Gordo, Emmet, Hancock, Kossuth, Palo Alto, Winnebago and Worth counties. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the counties of Black Hawk, Boone, Calhoun, Greene, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Webster, Bremer, Butler, Franklin, Humboldt, Pocahontas and Wright that goes into effect at 6am and will be in effect until 6pm. A Winter Weather Advisory begins shortly and will expire at 6pm for the following counties, Carroll, Crawford and Sac. In Addition, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 9pm Thursday evening for the following counties, Plymouth, Cherokee, Buena Vista, Woodbury, Ida, Lyon, Osceola, Sioux, OBrien and Clay. Freezing rain is expected to begin around sunrise and continue through most of the day. A brief switchover to rain may be possible in the southern areas of the Winter Weather Advisory area. All precip will switch over to snow by this afternoon with 2-4 inches possible north of Iowa Hwy 3, with isolated 6 inch amounts closer to the Iowa Minnesota border. Ice accumulations may reach 1/4 inch in places. To make the storm complete, the Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of Severe Weather for today and tonight for areas southeast of a line from Farmington to Burlington, including Fort Madison and Keokuk. The main threat will be large hail. Some elevated thunderstorms may move into the state from Missouri this morning and could produce some marginally severe hail and even small non-severe hail as far north as Interstate 80 corridor (mainly east of Des Moines). The main severe weather action will stay to the south in Missouri and central Illinois.
ADDITIONAL NOTE (4am) The Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include Marshall, Story and Tama counties until 6pm this evening. This is for as much as two tenths of an inch of ice accumulation. Some of the freezing rain may be accompanied by thunder and lightning.
