The major winter storm is currently developing in the southern plains at mid-morning. Clouds are beginning to overspread the state at this time. Travel should not be effected until mid-afternoon at the earliest. The precip will start out as freezing rain and sleet in the south and snow with some sleet in the north. Many of the warnings go into effect at mid-afternoon and travel will become hazardous later tonight into Friday. Accumulations of snow will likely be between 4-10 inches north of Interstate 80 where it will remain snow the longest with ice accumulations of at least 1/2 inch south of the interstate. Some runs are showing more ice accumulation than 1/2 inch, in anycase power outages are likely in southern Iowa later tonight into tomorrow.
